The trip started with the highway run to the turn-off to Wombeyan Caves. From that turn-off the road get progressively narrow and twisty as you go along. In a couple of spots there are mirrors fitted to the side of the road to make it easier to see. With a slower speed and taking it nice and easy it is a pleasant drive of an afternoon. Word of warning – this road is unsuitable for caravans and I’d be hesitant to recommend taking a camping trailer – it is very narrow.
Camping at the park was quite pleasant. There was showers and toilets to keep the girls happy and the communal firepot was quite pleasant until we were rudely interrupted by someone – however all’s well that ends well and he got to go to bed with no bruises 🙂
Being the first time I had been out with the group from the Overlander forum there was plenty of chatting and a few quiet rums were devoured along the way.
This trip is a fairly easy trip to negotiate and quite easily done in a standard vehicle. Keep in mind that it is still a fair distance from any mainstream facilities and NRMA may struggle to get out to you if you have problems.
Along the way we were stopped by an echidna crossing the road. We helped him off with a shovel in case someone else didn’t see him (it is a very dusty gravel track). The kids thought it was great to get out and take a look at him.
The Dingo Dell part at the end is a little bit more technical and will require low range. In the dry it is still quite easy to deal with, but if it is wet I wouldn’t recommend going anywhere near the area. This is due to it being a clay based track, and the damage that occurs will make it harder for our children to access in the future.
All in all the caves to caves run is a good introduction to 4WDing and camping with the family.
