Symmons Plains – V8’s 2014 season

Just spent last Sunday at the V8 race at Symmons Plains, Tasmania. We are lucky in that it’s only a very short drive to the track from home. The weather wasn’t all that flash in the morning, but fortunately it cleared into a fantastic day around lunchtime.

The track itself comes into some criticism, especially from TV viewers. But from a spectator viewpoint it is brilliant – there was only turn 2 that we couldn’t see from our vantage point. I can’t say I’ve heard many bad comments from drivers either, with most expressing the point that it’s quite technical and there really is no chance for a break.

The kids area is still a fantastic area, in particular for young Ethan who absolutely loved the ‘cars’ equipment. The pits area is very open making for some great access and viewing, although I have no doubt that this isn’t a good thing for the teams/drivers who are trying to work. The kids had some great insight into tyre management as they watched the teams prepare for the race.

The only things I would criticise is the lack of entertainment. It feels like the event is ‘half’ done at the moment – no live music (day or night), no bikes, no drifting – that type of stuff. They need to turn it into a full weekend package, where you don’t want to leave. Big periods of kids being bored between races sucks for the parents…..

A BIG BIG THANKS to Budgie!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

Cheers
Chris
