Cockle Creek – Nov 14

I was again invited to help teach an off-road 4WD/truck course for the RAAF during late November, a course that has been a lot of fun over time. I won’t rehash how great the East Coast is, because if you’ve been an avid reader of my posts you’d have seen plenty of pics and words over time.

However part of this course was a run south from Hobart down to Cockle Creek then back at night. We had a substantial layover whilst waiting for last light to come along, so I also took the opportunity to walk right down around to Fisher’s Point, and then the First Lookout Point. Without big-noting myself, I wouldn’t recommed the walk if you aren’t used to soft sand, loose rocks and have a moderate level of fitness. It looks a lot easier on the map than it is. Saying that it isn’t all that bad, just don’t go into it with your blinkers on. Also being that you are walking on the edge of the water, keep on eye on the waves. It wouldn’t be the first (or last time) that someone has been caught out on this coastline.

The pics really tell the story, but in short the water was spectacular. I struggled to drive away at the end of it all, and noticed that the free camping down there was limited to a month – I reckon I could easily spend a month down there! The weather was windy and wet at times, but nothing unusual for the area.
